I signed up for Google alerts a while back to remind me whenever there is a reference to iBakeSale.com our there on the web. On Friday, I received a reminder for an online article written for the The News Herald of Morganton North Carolina about some fundraising ideas I’ve never heard of. I thought some of these were so hilarious (I’d never heard of them before) that I wanted to share with you folks.
The article starts talking about how fund raising is a way to raise needed funds for the community. Folks in Morganton sell baked goods, calendars, greeting cards, cookies, nuts and many other traditional things we all know and love (okay, maybe not).
However, one thing in particular fundraiser caught my eye, pink lawn ornaments in the form of plastic pink flamingos. This fundraiser is part extortion and part practical joke. The way it works is that a youth group, typically, goes around to neighborhood houses and places plastic flamingos on their lawn with instructions to pay a fee for removal.
The fee is usually around $10 and supposedly works like a charm. Better yet, flamingo insurance protection can be purchased at any church service to protect one’s lawn from the plastic birds. Hilarious!
If any of you are interested in a crazy new fundraiser that is sure to get you in your local newspaper, this one is for you!

Hilarious Fundraising Idea
A great idea for fund raising for your local charities or even school!
Too funny! I love it.
Interesting.
But why can’t they take it out themselves?
I have no idea. It would be easy to take it out themselves. Maybe they figured it they would look cheap if they didn’t just pay the kids $10 for their school fundraiser…
The youth group at my former church did this several times and it was FUN. The first flamingo landing went to the highest bidder who then picked their next destination. Each subsequent person had to pay $25.00 to send them on to the next person. The only way you could be immune from getting them on your lawn for 24 hours was to pay $25.00 for Flamingo Insurance. I loved it and sent them on to my sister . . . the neighbors were all talking about them, they looked totally cool on my front lawn (I wanted them to stay), and it was great advertising for the youth group because they put a sign up along with the birds. We even had a bride and groom bird because one of the houses picked belonged to a couple who were newlyweds and they decorated them to look like a bride and groom.
That sounds so adorable!
This works really great. Our Youth did this and we had a lot of fun doing it. We had a pick up fee, plus an extra fee if the “flamingoed” church member had another destination for the flock, which most did. (We had two flocks going at a time with about 15 per flock). We also had insurance but that did not prevent you from getting flocked…we would just forego the pick up fee. They gladly had fun paying the extra fee to send them to their friends…Awesome and fun fundraiser.
It’s really an awesome idea that can totally bring a community together. I’d love to meet the person who came up with this idea in the first place.
A local group in our town uses PIGS. The movie is raised for Cancer Research and is very popular for about a month around the annual walk. You can call and request a pig to be placed for a fee and of course to have it removed you must also pay a fee. The are always the top money maker for the annual event. Great idea.
